Automatic Convenience With The Friedrich D70bp 70 Pint Dehumidifier

Friedrich is best known for producing air conditioners using high-quality materials. Dehumidifiers rely on much of the same technology as air conditioning, so it is no surprise that Friedrich would enter this market as well. Friedrich dehumidifiers come in several capacities. The 70-pint Friedrich unit can remove 3.5 pints of water per hour from rooms up to 1400 square feet. With a powerful fan that operates at 306 CFM on the highest setting, this machine is an air mover.

The Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier is ENERGY STAR rated, can work in temperatures as cool as 41 degrees Fahrenheit, and consumers approximately 750 watts of energy during normal operation. This 70-pint dehumidifier is notable for the versatile options it offers for handling water removal as well as for its sturdy construction and user-friendly interface.

Many Means Of Water Removal

One of the biggest hassles of owning and using a dehumidifier is keeping the water collection tank emptied. Often the capacity of the collection tank is significantly lower than the dehumidifier’s actual water removal capacity. So while a dehumidifier may be capable of removing 70 pints of water in a 24-hour period, the water tank won’t hold nearly that amount.

This is probably a good thing, as it would be difficult to slide out a plastic tank holding 70 pints of water without spilling it all over your floor! Nonetheless, the capacity clash between the water tank and the dehumidifier can present a challenge when you are attempting to dry a very wet space.

Dehumidifier manufacturers have created several solutions to this problem. The Friedrich D70BP 70 Pint Dehumidifier features all of them:

  • Manual-Use Water Tank: As with most dehumidifiers, the Friedrich D70BP 70 Pint Dehumidifier has a water tank designed to hold accumulated water for later emptying. The tank for the Friedrich holds up to 16 pints of water. An automatic shut off will halt the unit’s operation if the tank becomes full and at risk for overflowing. The water tank itself is plastic, but of sturdy construction. While other dehumidifiers often receive reviews indicating that tank removal is precarious due to the flimsy structure of the vessel, the Friedrich D70BP 70 Pint Dehumidifier’s tank stands up to the task. I think there is still a risk of spills anytime you are dealing with tubs full of water, so I would be nervous trying to empty the full tank.
  • Gravity-Based Drainage System: Fortunately, with the Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier, there are other options for water removal. An included gravity drain hose can be fed into the unit for carrying water to a nearby floor drain. This included drain hose is only about 3 feet long which may limit where you place your dehumidifier. But, the hose can be extended by attaching it to a regular garden hose. This option will significantly expand your range.
  • Auto-Start Water Pump: What makes the Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier stand out in the crowded field of high-capacity dehumidifiers is its built-in pump. Very few dehumidifiers offer pumps as a built-in option, it is more common for the end user to have to purchase a pump separately if they do not have access to a floor drain and need continuous water removal. The Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier’s built-in pump works with a removable 16.5-foot hose equipped with a special adapter. This hose uses a different drain outlet than the gravity drain hose. When the pump’s hose is installed in the correct outlet, the unit automatically engages the built-in pump. The lack of a floor drain is no problem for the Friedrich. This powerful accessory to the Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier will pump water for a distance of 15 feet away from the unit, horizontally or vertically.
  • Note: The Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier comes with a built-in water pump, as do all the other units with the “BP” designation. Units that don’t include BP in the ID don’t have the built-in pump.

Informative And User-Friendly Interface

  • Dual Display: The control panel on the Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier is attractive and useful. Using the top-mounted control panel you can enter in the settings you desire. Two LCD displays show room temperature in either Celsius or Fahrenheit and the room’s relative humidity. With a little tweaking, the unit can be programmed to display your desired humidity level instead. As I mentioned previously, the Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier has an indicator light to alert you if the water reservoir is full.
  • Adjustable Humidity: The Friedrich has a built-in hygrometer that measures room humidity. You can set your desired humidity level in 5 percent increments to any level between 30 and 90 percent. This Friedrich unit’s fan operates in conjunction with the compressor to maintain your desired humidity settings and does not have a continuous fan-only option.
  • Other Key Features: Although the unit does not allow for continual operation, it can be set to run at predetermined times. The timer is programmable in hourly increments for periods of up to 24 hours. You can also choose between high or low fan settings. The Friedrich also includes the essential Auto-defrost feature that keeps the unit from freezing up during operation. If frost forms the compressor stops operation until the cold coating melts away. Memory features allow the unit to resume operation under its previous settings in the event of a power interruption.

Distracting Detractions

The Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier is unusual in not offering a continual operation mode or a fan-only mode. This prevents the unit from being used as ventilation unit when it is not needed for dehumidification. The fan for this model will only operate when the compressor is also in operation. Some users report being distracted by the on-off noise resulting from this fact.

The fan is louder than that of many competitors’ brands. On high, the fan emits 73.1 decibels of noise and it emits 67.7 decibels on the low setting. Unless you can accustom yourself to the intermittent quality of the fan’s operation, this unit is probably not a good choice for use in a bedroom while you are trying to sleep. Perhaps that is why the Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier comes equipped with a 24-hour timer.

Useful Unit For Basements, Kitchens And Landry Rooms

The Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier is a powerful, but somewhat loud, dehumidifier. I find it surprising that it is recommended for spaces of only 1400 square feet given its fan power and capacity.

I wonder if it might not be able to handle more. I would suggest using this unit in a basement, kitchen or laundry room if you are battling high humidity as the unit will run frequently. For lighter use, I would consider the Friedrich for a bathroom or bedroom with attached bath. The unit could be set to operate during the day and turned off at night to address the fan’s noise issue. The attractive flat front design of the Friedrich D70BP Dehumidifier will fit into any room’s décor and help keep your and your belongings dry.
